4. Detailed History of Arashiyama

 - Major Historical Figures Associated with Arashiyama -

Arashiyama is one of the most iconic scenic spots in Kyoto, and throughout its history, many notable individuals have played significant roles. Below are two particularly important figures.

 ■ Hata no Kawakatsu (秦河勝)

Hata no Kawakatsu was a member of the Hata clan, a group of immigrants who arrived in Japan from the Kingdom of Silla around the 5th century. Known as a community of skilled craftsmen, they possessed advanced knowledge in architecture, weaving, sake brewing, and other technologies originating from the continent (China).

Among them, Hata no Kawakatsu made a substantial contribution to developing the area around Arashiyama. He built weirs and irrigation channels on the Katsura River  to promote agricultural development throughout the Rakusai (洛西) region of western Kyoto. This flood control method resembled the style of the ancient Dujiangyan system in the Chinese state of Shu (in present-day Sichuan Province), indicating a high level of engineering expertise.

Specifically, by creating a sandbank that protruded like a peninsula from the riverbank to regulate the flow of water and open irrigation channels, Hata no Kawakatsu transformed the once marshy river basin into lush farmland.

 ■ Emperor Kameyama (亀山上皇)

Emperor Kameyama, also known as the 90th emperor, reigned during the late Kamakura period and greatly contributed to enhancing the landscape of Arashiyama. Following Emperor Go-Saga (後嵯峨上皇, the 88th emperor), he had hundreds of cherry trees from Mt. Yoshino in Nara transplanted to Arashiyama. Thanks to his efforts, Arashiyama firmly established its reputation as a premier cherry blossom viewing spot, attracting large numbers of visitors to this day.

Another anecdote involves Emperor Kameyama enjoying a boating excursion on a night with a full moon. While gazing at the moon from Hōrinji Bridge (法輪寺橋) spanning the Katsura River (also called the Ōi River, 大堰川), he remarked that it resembled a moon “passing through the sky without a single cloud” (「くまなき月の渡るに似る」). This phrase is said to have inspired the name of the famous Togetsukyō Bridge (渡月橋).

 - Arashiyama and Its Religious Ties -

The Arashiyama area has long been a crossroads of various religious cultures, leaving a strong influence on the region. Below is a closer look at Buddhism and the so-called “Keikyō” (Nestorian Christianity) in connection with Arashiyama.

 ■ Influence of Buddhism

DALL?E 2025-01-19 17.51.57 - A serene historical scene of the Danrinji Temple in Arashiyama, Kyoto, during the Heian period. The setting showcases traditional Japanese architecturimage is for illustration purposes.

Arashiyama is home to numerous temples, reflecting a deeply ingrained Buddhist culture. Notably, Danrin-ji Temple (壇林寺)—founded by Empress Tachibana no Kachiko (橘嘉智子), also known as Empress Danrin (壇林皇后) and consort of Emperor Saga (嵯峨天皇)—had a significant impact on early Heian period culture and Buddhism. At the time of its founding, Danrin-ji reportedly had twelve sub-temples (塔頭). It is also said that a Chinese monk named Gikū (義空) introduced Zen teachings here. The current Danrin-ji was rebuilt in 1964 (Shōwa 39).

 ■ Influence of Keikyō (Nestorian Christianity)

スクリーンショット 2025-01-19 17.49.01 (1)

In the vicinity of Arashiyama stands the Kaiko no Yashiro (蚕ノ社, officially 木嶋坐天照御魂神社), which features a rare “three-post torii” (三柱鳥居). This torii is constructed by combining three pillars into a triangular shape, with a sacred seat (神座) made of piled stones at the center. Some say it symbolizes the center of the universe, and one theory suggests it represents the Trinity of Nestorian Christianity. However, there is no conclusive evidence for this, and the origin of the three-post torii remains a mystery.

 - Legends and Anecdotes of Arashiyama -

Arashiyama boasts numerous legends and anecdotes passed down through the ages. Below are two particularly famous ones: the Legend of Chidorigafuchi (千鳥ヶ淵) and folklore surrounding Togetsukyō Bridge (渡月橋).

 ■ The Legend of Chidorigafuchi

DALL?E 2025-01-19 17.51.49 - A serene and melancholic depiction of Chidori-ga-fuchi (千鳥ヶ淵) located on the right bank of Hozugawa River in Arashiyama, Kyoto, during the late Heian -1image is for illustration purposes.

Located on the right bank of the Hozu River (保津川) in Arashiyama, Chidorigafuchi (千鳥ヶ淵) is known for a tragic love story from the late Heian period. A court lady named Yokobue (横笛), who served Kenrei-mon’in (建礼門院), had her heart broken by Takiguchi Nyūdō (滝口入道, Saitō Toshiyori) and wandered into Sagano in despair.

However, Takiguchi Nyūdō, who had taken vows as a monk, refused to see her. Overcome by sorrow, Yokobue is said to have thrown herself into the Ōi River (大堰川, the former name of the Hozu River). That spot came to be called Chidorigafuchi, and the story continues to be handed down to the present day.

 ■ Folklore Surrounding Togetsukyō Bridge

三参-1image is for illustration purposes.

The Togetsukyō Bridge, a symbol of Arashiyama, is closely linked to a custom known as “Jūsan-mairi” (十三参り). Jūsan-mairi is a traditional ceremony in which children, upon turning thirteen, visit the deity Kōkūzō Bosatsu (虚空蔵菩薩) to pray for wisdom and blessings. In Kyoto, Hōrin-ji Temple (法輪寺) is well-known for this ritual. On the way back from the temple, there is a popular belief that if one looks back while crossing Togetsukyō Bridge, “the wisdom just received will be lost.”

This belief stems from viewing the newly bestowed wisdom as a “power to move into the future,” suggesting that looking back on the past diminishes that power. For this reason, not turning around until completely across the bridge is seen as a sign of personal growth and determination. Even today, this practice remains part of a traditional ritual in Kyoto, allowing visitors to feel the depth of the city’s culture and history.
