Recommended Summer Sightseeing Spots in Arashiyama
Kyoto-Arashiyama is one of Japan’s premier tourist areas combining “scenery,” “culture,” and “coolness.”
Summer is especially the season when bamboo leaves rustle in the breeze, the river surface carries coolness, and moss and green maples glow with freshness.
Here, we introduce 5 carefully selected Arashiyama spots that you’ll want to visit precisely because it’s summer.
1. Arashiyama Bamboo Grove Path
~ A natural cooler where breezes blow even in summer ~

A tunnel of green bamboo stretching approximately 400 meters.
Even in the strong summer sun, the shade created by the bamboo and good ventilation provide comfort like a natural air conditioner.
As you walk the path, the sound of rustling bamboo leaves, dappled sunlight, and cool air will calm your mind.
Unlike the bustling daytime, **early morning (7:00-9:00)** sees fewer visitors, allowing photography and strolls in a fantastical silence.
Duration: About 10-15 minutes on foot
Access: 10-minute walk from Randen “Arashiyama Station” or JR “Saga-Arashiyama Station”
2. Tenryuji Temple and Sogenchi Garden
~ A World Heritage site of coolness and silence painted by green maples and lotus ~

World Heritage Site Tenryuji Temple is the head temple of the Rinzai sect and the centerpiece of Arashiyama sightseeing.
Within its grounds spreads Sogenchi Garden, a stroll-style pond garden using Arashiyama as borrowed scenery, where in summer, green maples grow lush across the area and lotus flowers bloom, creating a fantastical landscape.
The sight of greenery reflected in the pond blending with the blue sky brings a sense of coolness unique to summer.
The garden also has gazebos and verandas where breezes pass through, and simply sitting and gazing leisurely is a luxurious way to spend time.
Admission: Garden 500 yen (Combined ticket with Main Hall 800 yen)
Visiting hours: 8:30-17:30 (last admission 17:00)
3. Togetsukyo Bridge and Katsura River Banks
~ A famous spot of wind and light, perfect for evening strolls ~

**The iconic “Togetsukyo Bridge” of Arashiyama** is a 155-meter bridge spanning the Katsura River (Oi River).
Said to have been built in the Heian period, its name derives from the elegant anecdote that “the full moon appeared to cross the bridge.”
While it bustles with tourists during the day, twilight time is especially recommended.
As the heat softens, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the sunset sinking behind the mountains, accompanied by breezes crossing the Katsura River surface.
The Arashiyama ridgeline and river flow seen from atop the bridge are extremely photogenic. Many people sit on the riverbank to spend time, as time flows gently in nature.
Recommended visiting time: Early morning or evening is best
Nearby cafes, benches, and houseboat boarding points available
4. Okochi Sanso Garden
~ A luxurious garden of moss and tea, quietly nestled deep in the bamboo grove ~

Deep beyond the Bamboo Grove Path, in a quiet location away from tourist bustle, lies “Okochi Sanso.”
It is the former villa built by Denjiro Okochi, a famous actor of the early Showa era, featuring expansive gardens covering approximately 20,000 square meters and a tea house.
In summer, the garden moss grows even deeper in color, and green maples overhead create a landscape like a ceiling of green.
The admission fee includes matcha and confections, allowing you to enjoy a refined moment of coolness while gazing at the garden.
Admission: 1,000 yen (includes matcha)
Panoramic views of the Kyoto cityscape from within the garden
5. Gio-ji Temple
~ A temple of moss, bamboo, and legend, enveloped in green ~

Deep in Sagano, a hidden renowned temple wrapped in moss and bamboo.
Known as the temple where Gio, a shirabyoshi dancer beloved by Taira no Kiyomori, became a nun and spent the rest of her life, it is a space rich in literary sentiment.
In summer, the moss garden spreads like a green carpet, and dappled sunlight falling on the moss and the sound of wind chimes bring coolness to the heart.
The temple itself is compact, attracting few tour groups, making it an ideal retreat for those who want to quietly commune with nature.
Admission: 300 yen
Duration: About 20 minutes even at a leisurely pace (quiet contemplation recommended)
