— What is Akita Prefecture?—

Akita Prefecture is a charming area located in the northwestern part of Honshu, Japan. Its rich nature and unique history are very attractive to international tourists.

Known since ancient times as Dewa, it served as a key point of exchange between Honshu and Hokkaido. Akita Prefecture was also a cultural center of the northern Tohoku region where Hiraizumi culture flourished, and its unique culture was nurtured by two feudal lords: the Satake clan and the Akita clan.

Akita Prefecture captivates visitors with its beautiful landscapes, including the Shirakami Mountains (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Lake Tazawa, and the stunning scenery along the Oga Peninsula. Local cuisine featuring regional ingredients and traditional crafts are also part of the tourism experience.

 ● The Appeal of Lake Tazawa

Lake Tazawa is Japan’s deepest lake, located in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture, attracting visitors with its mystical beauty and diverse charm. The lake is nearly circular, with a circumference of approximately 20 kilometers and a depth of 423.4 meters. Its most distinctive feature is the lapis lazuli-colored lake surface. Its high transparency has earned it the nickname “Japan’s Lake Baikal.”

On the lakeside stands the golden “Tatsuko Statue,” beloved as the symbol of Lake Tazawa. This statue is based on the legend of “Princess Tatsuko,” who is said to have become a dragon in pursuit of eternal beauty, giving the lake a deep historical background and mystical quality. Pleasure boats operate along the lakeside, allowing visitors to enjoy the beautiful surrounding scenery from the water.

Furthermore, Lake Tazawa has been certified as one of “Japan’s 100 Best Moon Viewing Spots,” and the beauty of the moonlit lake surface is extraordinary. Combined with the natural beauty of each season, it is a place where new charms can be discovered with every visit.

Lake Tazawa has a beautiful legend called the “Legend of Princess Tatsuko.” Long ago, a beautiful maiden named Tatsuko lived in the village of Innai and prayed to Kannon for eternal beauty. Following a divine revelation, she drank water from a spring to the north, but suffered from an unquenchable thirst, eventually transforming into a dragon and becoming the guardian deity of Lake Tazawa.

On the lakeside stands Gozanoishi Shrine, which enshrines Princess Tatsuko, and the spring where she is said to have drunk the water that triggered her transformation into a dragon. On the southern shore of the lake stands the golden “Tatsuko Statue,” symbolizing Princess Tatsuko’s story and allowing visitors to feel the world of legend.

The scenery across all four seasons is also a major attraction of Kakunodate. Kakunodate Samurai District is a historic townscape located in Kakunodate-machi, Semboku City, Akita Prefecture. Also called the “Little Kyoto of Michinoku,” it captivates many people with its elegant scenery. Its origins date back to the early Edo period, when Ashina Yoshikatsu, who governed the Kakunodate area, established a new castle town at the southern foot of Furushiroyama in 1620 (Genna 6).

At that time, the old castle town located at the northern foot of Furushiroyama suffered from floods and fires. To avoid these disasters, Yoshikatsu decided to relocate to the southern foot, which was more suitable for defense due to its terrain. The new castle town was designed with wide roads and good visibility, incorporating measures for fire prevention and defense.
